2008 Tiburon Chili Cookoff, Sat. Sep 6

I am announcing my intentions to revive the revered Tiburon Chili Festival as the Tiburon Chili Cookoff for Saturday September 6, 2008 from 1-4pm. In 2008 the event will take on an international scope as we join the International Chili Society. Winners will have a chance at the $30,000 prize at the 42nd World Championship Chili Cookoff October 3-5, 2008 in Omaha, Nebraska.
-Robert James

The International Chili Society (ICS) is a non-profit organization that sanctions chili cookoffs with judging and cooking rules & regulations. These events are world wide and benefit charities or non-profit organizations. All winners of ICS sanctioned cookoffs qualify to compete for cash prizes and awards at the World's Championship Chili Cookoff held each year in October. The ICS is the largest food contest, festival organization in the world.

Sounds like a lot of fun. What will the prize be? Entry fee? Why did it die?

My wish comes true! I recently asked Georgia if we could revive The Chili Cookoff, & Eureka! Don & I met at the 1997 event while I was selling Raffle Tickets. The rest is history...Thanks for your continuous support of the Tiburon Chamber. We've been like family during my 15 years of membership.

Thank goodness someone had the good sense to create a conforming competition. True chili is an all meat dish (beef only). It does not contain beans, nor any other "white bread" ingredients: no bell peppers and no tomatoes. The red color comes from the chilis (hence, the name), i.e. peppers: mostly, though not exclusively, of the pasilla variety (e.g. pasilla negro, pasilla mulato, etc.)

Heretofore, many of the recipies permitted in Tiburon's cookoffs were to chili what Chef Boy-R-Dee and Spaghetti Os are to Italian cuisine. Not surprising, however, if one looks at the Mexican foods section of Tiburon's Safeway with La Victoria heading up the brands.
